Verizon's Hardest Working Small Biz Mom?

Here is my entry into the Verizon's Hardest Working Small Biz Mom contest... the winner gets a year's worth of professional cleaning and $5,000!

When I was in college, my nickname was 'couch', because I slept on a pull-out couch bed. How appropriate, because today, I am running a successful small business from my couch. Yes, I have a home office, where I meet with clients, but lets face it, a one year old doesn't do well around printers and wires.

Now, being a mom is a full time job, so when you start your own small business, you are pretty much bordering on insane. I started New Market Media Web & Graphic Design after I had my first child, and I am still here, 8 years and 4 kids later.

I do all of the typical mom stuff from homework and carpooling, to cleaning and cooking, I also do some pretty crazy things like designing favor tags to match a birthday party theme or teaching my 6 year old Photoshop and recently I started couponing (not quite successful yet)Why am I "Verizon's Hardest Working Small Biz Mom" because (this is the part where I suck up) I truly use Verizon for all of the work that I do. In addition to my Droid, I have a laptop, a desktop, a wireless blue ray player, and an ipod, all running off my internet. I use all of these simultaneously to run my business - desktop as my main computer, laptop to work on the couch, ipod and Netflix on blue ray (keeping my kids quiet right now as I write this).

What else? I teach part time, I have clients that range from mompreneurs to a large hospital and I give my services pro-bono to several non-profits, I am the ultimate multi-tasker and I never say 'no' to a friend.

Why do I want to win? Well, the keys are falling off the laptop as I type and I really would love to win the cleaning service for my husband who just wants matching socks.

WEST BOYLSTON — The town officially became the center of a support movement aimed at new or expectant mothers last week with the official ribbon cutting of Mothers and Company. The business, part retail store, part social hub, part consulting firm, part support group, relocated to West Boylston on Oct. 13 after three years in Boylston. Last Wednesday, the town and the Wachusett Chamber of Commerce officially welcomed the company to town.

According to owner and co-founder Jeanette Mesite Frem, the new location was dubbed an “oasis for parents,” by state Senator Harriette Chandler, who toured the building last week.

“That’s a perfect description for us,” Frem said, “an oasis; a spa without the hoity-toity attitude.”

Frem said Mothers and Company officially opened three years ago in a room at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club, a Boylston business also owned by the Frem family. The idea came from Frem and a group of friends, all of whom were involved in different areas of the healthcare industry involving childbirth and parenting, from nurses to midwives.

Frem said discussions among the friends revealed many frustrations about the lack of one location for the multiple support groups or retail items, like cloth diapers and baby slings, the women would recommend to their clients.

“You had to go to one hospital for one thing, go to another for something else and look on the Internet for the items we were recommending,” she said.

Instead, the group brainstormed and developed Mothers and Company, which now boasts the largest retail selection of nursing bras and cloth diapers in the area, she said.

While owning the 500 square foot space in Boylston allowed complete control, its size limited flexibility and ultimately would not allow Frem to reach her goals with Mothers and Company. Retail items were displayed around the outside of one room, where all of the classes and activities took place.

In contrast, the company’s new home in the Three Rivers Building at 140 Worcester St., the former home of RayAnn Physical Therapy, allows for many more activities, Frem said.

“I saw this building three years and knew it would be a great location,” she said. “Things didn’t work out at the time.”

Town Administrator Leon Gaumond Jr. represented the town at the ribbon cutting, referencing Frem’s comments about finding the ideal spot to expand.

“Nothing makes me happier than to hear a business owner say they were looking for the right place and they found in here in West Boylston,” Gaumond said.

Activities and classes now include childbirth classes, developmental playtime for toddlers, breastfeeding classes, pre-natal and post-natal exercise classes and consultations for post-partum depression and similar afflictions. All the employees can empathize with the clients, she noted.

“Every person who works here is a mother who breastfed,” Frem said.

And, the list of what services to offer clients is ever-growing, she said. Upcoming classes listed on the company’s Web site include: Nursing beyond the first year, music and movement, vaccination information and a diaper-free information session.

“Anything you can think of, we’ll try to do,” Frem said. “We’re always welcoming new ideas.”

Clients can also take advantage of the other therapeutic businesses in the Three Rivers building, including a chiropractor, a masseuse, holistic medicine, an acupuncturist and Chinese herbal medicine.

“Really, it was just taking the vision I had three years ago and finding space for it,” Frem said.

Their logo had a brown dot with the word 'moco' inside it which they wanted to get rid of. So, what we did was take some of the colors from their logo and create this.

Businessperson she admires most and why: The businessperson I admire most is my grandfather, Peter Angelakis. He grew up very poor, the son of Greek immigrants and became a very successful businessperson. He taught me about work ethic and he is always giving me support and advice on how to deal with clients, employees and business in general.

If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do? If I wasn’t doing web/graphic design, I would probably go back to my former job as an instructional technologist. I have a master’s in education in technology and I love teaching teachers how to use technology to enhance their curriculum.

With Twitter Envy, Facebook Adds (Near) Real-time Web Capabilities

(gigaom.com) -- Facebook today announced several (and somewhat big) changes to their homepage/newsfeed, as well as the removal of most distinctions between public pages and profiles. These changes are an attempt to take on Twitter, which Facebook failed to acquire late last year. Facebook has always been the proponent of a more interactive web, but the growing popularity of Twitter has shifted the focus from mere interactivity to a more real-time web.
Real-time web, as we’ve argued in the past, is the next logical step in the Internet’s evolution. Twitter currently leads this move to a “now web,” but today Facebook took steps to becoming a real-time web company, though it has a ways to go. For starters, Facebook announced changes to its home page that would allow streaming of “posts from your friends in real-time.” Facebook also changed the status prompt from “What are you doing right now?” to “What’s on your mind?” — a blatant attempt to prompt a more real-time interaction, and bringing it one step further than Twitter’s “What are you doing?”
In another move that mimics the Twitter functionality, Facebook announced that from now on there will no longer be a limit to the number of friends a user can have (the previous limit was 5,000). There will also no longer be Facebook “Pages;” everyone will have profiles instead. In the past, Facebook avoided this type of interaction, opting to classify users as fans, and hampering the levels of interaction.
Twitter, however, has one type of profile for everyone, and has broken down these barriers, as people (famous and non-famous alike) and organizations have adapted to engage in two-way dialogues. A great example of this difference is in Shaq’s Facebook page, where interaction is one-sided and his Twitter, where he and fans speak to each other directly. Undoubtedly, Facebook does not want organizations, especially those with large ad dollars, to move over to Twitter to build their audiences.
While we don’t necessarily believe that Twitter and Facebook are competitors as of today, the future is uncertain for both, and Facebook is smart to be addressing the Twitter question.
Twitter’s growth has been astounding; it has managed to capture the hearts and minds of users and developers alike: In 2008, Twitter grew by 752 percent. Twitter has also fostered a somewhat more democratic ecosystem, one that has allowed apps on the platform to see huge growth in traffic. That has sparked a gold rush for app developers, many of whom have been frustrated by the restrictions handed down to them by Facebook.
We wonder if these attempts by Facebook may be a case of too little too late. With exponential growth, a new round of capital, and developers creating innovative apps on the platform, Twitter is well positioned to ride out the roadblocks Facebook is putting in its way. Furthermore, as Facebook adapts its platform to stave off the Twitter threat, it will be interesting to see how the community reacts, as they’ve been notably resistant to change.
